HarborWalk Village Honors Alaqua Animal Refuge's Laurie Hood Thursday

The Red, White and Blue Celebrations are a weekly ceremony that honors local heroes. The celebrations highlight the efforts of people who go above and beyond, demonstrating heroism within their community. The celebrations continue all summer, featuring free local entertainment and children's fun activities. The entertainment performances will include the Highsteppers Dance troupe and The Ballet Conservatory along with the Destin School of Music and Dance performing pieces of their own On The Road to Fame Show. One of the highlights of the celebration is an exciting WWII mini airshow at the beginning of the hero's recognition every Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
The big finale for each celebration is a spectacular fireworks display over Destin Harbor at 8:30 p.m. Weekly fireworks displays are sponsored by Buffalo Rock, Pepsi MAX and Cox Communications.
HarborWalk Village is honored to dedicate the Thursday, June 10th celebration to Laurie Hood the Founder and President of Alaqua Animal Refuge, Inc. Laurie Hood opened Alaqua Animal Refuge in January 2007 on 10 acres of her her and her husband, Taylor's personal property after discovering that thousand of animals were being euthanized every year because Walton County, FL did not have a no-kill shelter option. They designed the refuge to be distinctly different from the standard concrete and chain link kennel concept by providing several independent cottages for shelter that offer open pastures and ponds. In the first three years Laurie ran and funded the refuge nearly all on her own and was responsible for finding homes for more than 4000 animals. The refuge is currently home to more than 250 animals at any given time and places more than 100 animals per month. The refuge accepts nearly any animal in need of care, including dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, turtles, birds, pigs and horses. Alaqua also has an adoption center through space donated by Legendary Inc. that is located at HarborWalk Village. This location has dogs and cats, is open Thursday through Sunday, and provides another opportunity for rescued animals to find homes. Laurie is a champion for these animals. Laurie has dedicated her life to being a voice for those who have none of their own.

Despite Age Discrimination, There Is Still Beauty in the World

"I don't know how to get a 40-year-old woman on the radio. If she was 20, 25. This record would be incredible." This quote comes from a powerful record label executive, just before she said no to signing me for my fifth album. And who would fault her? Everybody knows that a 40-year-old female recording artist is "geriatric." While a 46-year-old president is the "new kid on the block," a singer over 30 is just a few songs away from the nursing home of music.
The obvious remedies: Age defying crème, botox, face lifts, brow lifts, hair dye, Perricone Promises, super foods and denial. Lying about our age was once a quick fix, but Wikipedia has ruined that for everybody. Cosmetic touch-ups and diet discipline may take ten years off, but how do you go ten years back? How do you sing songs that are relevant to teenagers and who are you fooling if you try?
I am a single mother of three teenagers. My every day begins and ends with them. Breakfast - school - teachers - grades - basketball - piano - tennis - birthday parties - money - etc. The best part of the day is when they smile or laugh, because when they're laughing or smiling, I know they're OK. Even if its just for a minute, even if I don't know what they're happy about, it's a relief. My biggest goal is to keep them talking, because that's the only way I know what they're thinking and what's going on, so the most important thing I do all day, is listen.
Sometimes I feel alone and it gets me down. One of those times, I heard my daughter laughing in the next room and it didn't necessarily make me feel better, but I exhaled, because I knew then that we were ok. That night, I wrote a song called "Beauty in the World."
There's a song on the album called "Kissed It" about staying in a bad relationship because the sex is so good. The first song on the album, "The Sellout" is about compromise. "Real Love" is a duet with Bobby Brown that talks about everlasting love. And "The Comeback" - about the day you realize that you cannot be who you are not. All of these are universal themes that even teenagers can relate to, but according to music industry experts, they'd much rather "Toot It and Boot It," pop champagne, love gangsters and skater boys, wear the latest Gucci, and meet at the hotel lobby at 6 in the morning.
With very few exceptions, the gatekeepers send these three messages:
1. The younger generation has little substance
2. The music needs of the older crowd don't matter...
3. Once a female artist turns 40, she should go away - maybe learn how to knit.
The truth is that as a mother of three teenagers, I can tell you that the music industry drastically underestimates the souls of the young. And that there are over 40 million women, in the United States alone, in their 30s, 40s and beyond, that are starving to be musically inspired and lyrically represented. While the fans miss out on great music because of age discrimination, there is still BEAUTY IN THE WORLD."

I feel like all I do is share sad news with you all, but, I need to tell you that former Pensacola Little Theatre President and volunteer, Ray Hillyer passed away on May 31. I've known Ray and his brother Henry since I took ballet from Elvie DeMarko in the sixties and seventies. My sincerest condolences to Henry, their family and friends. Obituary reprinted from the PNJ: Ray Gilder Hillyer passed away unexpected May 31 at his home, Melrose Manor. Ray was born December 1, 1932 in Sour Lake, TX. He was graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts. Following college Ray joined the United States Air Force. After serving at Hurlburt Field, Ray relocated to Pensacola where he remained until his death. He worked for the St. Regis Paper Company, later acquired by the Stone Container Company and was retired after more than 30 years as Senior Artist. He was an active member of the Pensacola Little Theater serving as president and continuing on the board for many years. He was extensively involved with the Elvie DeMarko School of Ballet, dancing, teaching and creating sets. He designed sets and costumes for the Crewe of La Fitte and De Luna coordinating the annual pageantry. He was a sought after consultant for many local weddings. Ray was an active member of Christ Church, a lifelong Episcopalian and devoted acolyte. He is survived by his brother, Henry H. Hillyer of Pensacola. Ray is also survived by one living sister and predeceased by one sister and two brothers outside of the Pensacola area. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Harry Hargrove Hill III officiating. Entombment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00pm, Friday, June 4, 2010 at the funeral home. BAYVIEW FISHER-POU CHAPEL, 3351 Scenic Highway, is in charge of arrangements. Kaylin Shuck Update 6-2: "Kaylin is doing better every day. All stitches/staples in her arm are out. She completed tenth grade via in-home schooling. She is still on pain meds. Kaylin was fitted with a walking boot. Insurance does not cover the in-home stuff, but she is getting better and has great attitude for someone who just six weeks ago was lying face down in the middle of the street after getting run over by a speeding motorcycle." Keep getting better Kaylin, we're rooting for you!

Seeking young actors, entering grades 1 thru 12 and Assistant Directors needed!.........A little red truck pulls into Destin with everything it takes to mount a full-scale musical production….except for the cast! Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation & the Missoula Children’s Theater will hold a one week summer theater residency, June 14 -18 for 60 children at Village Baptist Church in Destin. Auditions will be held for the production of Sleeping Beauty on June 14 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Some cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the auditions. Among the roles to be cast are Sleeping Beauty, Scarella, Madame Butterfly, the King, the Queen, Spot, Fairies, Trolls, Palace Attendants and Caterpillars. Students entering 1st - 12th grades are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant Directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. The Missoula Children's Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. Daily rehearsal times will be announced upon casting. A ticketed public performance of Sleeping Beauty will be performed on June 18 at 6:00pm at Village Baptist Church, 101 Matthew Boulevard, Destin. Admission is $10 for adults and children 12 and under are free. More summer fun!........the Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company will hold a week-long workshop from July 26 - 31 called Words, Words, Words: Understanding and Interpreting Shakespeare's Text. Join members of SetsCo for a week-long exploration of Shakespeare's poetry and the techniques that can bring his language to life. The workshop will be from noon-4pm every day and culminate in a public performance of material studied during the week. All teens are invited to participate. Entrants sought for Power of Photography Show (revised notice)......Do you have a favorite photo you took and have been wondering where to show it off? Here’s your chance. The Wide Angle Photo Club is seeking entrants for its 17th annual Power of Photography Show and Trade Expo. The show runs from July 9-11 at the Wright Place in downtown Pensacola. Anyone may enter contest pictures. The show is open to public viewing for free for three days, including Gallery Night. The show has community and business sponsors and national vendors, too. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to winning photos. Last year, some 750 entries by more than 150 photographers from all over the Gulf Coast helped raise over $3,000 for ARC Gateway. Interest is running high again this year says Marty Campbell, WAPC POP SHOW Chairman, of Gulf Breeze. “We’ve had a great response from the community, despite the tough economic times. We would also like to thank Thrift-T Drugs for being our major sponsor for this year’s show. We also need to thank Rob’s Camera as a major contributor.” Categories include Animals; Close-ups; Elements of Design; Flowers, Plants & Trees; Nature & Landscapes; Open, Art & Abstract. “Those include a broad spectrum of images and we think most people can find a category they’re comfortable with,” said WAPC member Kenny Wilder of Navarre Beach. “With this beautiful area in which we live, there’s surely some subject matter that will appeal to most everyone.” There is a special category for Youth (photos taken by photographers 16 and under) and all of those photos will be hung in the show and eligible for monetary awards also. Auditions will be held for the production of Sleeping Beauty on June 14 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Some cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the auditions. Among the roles to be cast are Sleeping Beauty, Scarella, Madame Butterfly, the King, the Queen, Spot, Fairies, Trolls, Palace Attendants and Caterpillars. Students entering 1st - 12th grades are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant Directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. The Missoula Children's Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. Daily rehearsal times will be announced upon casting. A ticketed public performance of Sleeping Beauty will be performed on June 18 at 6:00pm at Village Baptist Church, 101 Matthew Boulevard, Destin. Admission is $10 for adults and children 12 and under are free. More summer fun!........the Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company will hold a week-long workshop from July 26 - 31 called Words, Words, Words: Understanding and Interpreting Shakespeare's Text. Join members of SetsCo for a week-long exploration of Shakespeare's poetry and the techniques that can bring his language to life. The workshop will be from noon-4pm every day and culminate in a public performance of material studied during the week. All teens are invited to participate. Entrants sought for Power of Photography Show (revised notice)......Do you have a favorite photo you took and have been wondering where to show it off? Here’s your chance. The Wide Angle Photo Club is seeking entrants for its 17th annual Power of Photography Show and Trade Expo. The show runs from July 9-11 at the Wright Place in downtown Pensacola. Anyone may enter contest pictures. The show is open to public viewing for free for three days, including Gallery Night. The show has community and business sponsors and national vendors, too. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to winning photos. Last year, some 750 entries by more than 150 photographers from all over the Gulf Coast helped raise over $3,000 for ARC Gateway. Interest is running high again this year says Marty Campbell, WAPC POP SHOW Chairman, of Gulf Breeze. “We’ve had a great response from the community, despite the tough economic times. We would also like to thank Thrift-T Drugs for being our major sponsor for this year’s show. We also need to thank Rob’s Camera as a major contributor.” Categories include Animals; Close-ups; Elements of Design; Flowers, Plants & Trees; Nature & Landscapes; Open, Art & Abstract. “Those include a broad spectrum of images and we think most people can find a category they’re comfortable with,” said WAPC member Kenny Wilder of Navarre Beach. “With this beautiful area in which we live, there’s surely some subject matter that will appeal to most everyone.” There is a special category for Youth (photos taken by photographers 16 and under) and all of those photos will be hung in the show and eligible for monetary awards also. Contestants may enter as many original photos as they wish (size 8-by-10 or larger) for an entry fee of $10 per photo. A portion of the show proceeds go to benefit ARC, which helps developmentally disabled children and adults. Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, May 22, 1947, to John R. (Russ) Hills and Ruth E. Hills, Steve was the first of four brothers. He blazed his unique trails as an Air Force brat and moved all over the country collecting interesting hobbies and friends.
Steve may be best known as one of the most gifted of watercolor artists. In 1965, he graduated from Choctawhatchee High School, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and then attended Okaloosa-Walton Junior College, now Northwest Florida State College until 1967. From 1967 to 1969, he attended John McCrady Art School in New Orleans. During his service in the Army from 1969 to 1971, he was the Head of the Graphics Department for the Berlin Brigade. In 1974, Steve completed his formal art education, earning his B. A. from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California. For several years, Steve was involved with commercial illustration, advertising, and design, with agencies in New Orleans and California. His clients included Bell Telephone, Mo-Town Records, Mattel Toys, Continental Airlines and many more. Steve was also a very colorful and giving teacher. He shared his vast knowledge on many subjects with others. As well as exhibiting in several galleries, he won numerous awards from juried art shows and was featured in magazines, articles and reviews in the art world. His original watercolor paintings, oil paintings, and limited edition prints are in local galleries and in collections within the U.S., Germany, England and Australia. Steve was also a world-renowned model airplane enthusiast and an icon in u-control combat. He was one of the surfing pioneers in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, during the early '60's and in Hermosa Beach, California, from the '70's until the '90's. Along with his long-time friend, owner and driver Jim Jack, of Milton, Florida, he designed and built the Reptoid Monster Truck.
Steve's artistic skills, keen intellect, acerbic wit, and inability to be snowed by a pre-spun political sound bite fed his political satire cartoons.
Preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John M. Hills, Steve is survived by Trudy Craine, brothers, Thomas L. (Tom) Hills, Eric D. (Rick) Hills and wife Sally, niece and nephew Margaret (Maggie) and Adam Juengst, sister-in-law Janet Hills, niece Jennifer Ranck and husband Rich, grand nephew, John Richard Ranck, aunt Barbara Baumann and husband Bill, and numerous cousins.
Steve's unique perspective was lost to us all on his 63rd birthday, May 22, 2010. Due to his untimely death by natural causes, the world will be an even stranger place without him. In lieu of flowers, support the arts and think of Steve.

Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, May 22, 1947, to John R. (Russ) Hills and Ruth E. Hills, Steve was the first of four brothers. He blazed his unique trails as an Air Force brat and moved all over the country collecting interesting hobbies and friends.
Steve may be best known as one of the most gifted of watercolor artists. In 1965, he graduated from Choctawhatchee High School, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and then attended Okaloosa-Walton Junior College, now Northwest Florida State College until 1967. From 1967 to 1969, he attended John McCrady Art School in New Orleans. During his service in the Army from 1969 to 1971, he was the Head of the Graphics Department for the Berlin Brigade. Governor Crist Announces New Wave of Advertising to Encourage Travel to Florida

~Memorial Day to Labor Day is vital period for Sunshine State’s tourism industry~
TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today announced the first phase of an aggressive 90-day marketing campaign, pumping $7 million into the first three weeks of new advertising expected to reach nearly 500 million consumers in Northwest Florida’s traditional feeder markets. The release of funds in increments ensures that Florida will be able deploy messages that are responsive to the ever changing nature of the oil spill.
“Even though there are no physical impacts to Florida’s shores from the oil spill, the state’s tourism industry, especially in the Panhandle, has already felt a very real economic impact,” said Governor Crist. “With Memorial Day weekend kicking off the peak travel season, it is vital that travelers throughout the nation and the world know our beaches and waterways are clear and open for business.”
Presented by VISIT FLORIDA and local tourist development councils, the ad campaign utilizes a combination of broadcast television, national cable, radio and newspaper advertising. The campaign targets traditional feeder markets of Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Raleigh and St. Louis. Also included in the plan are major metro markets as well as 17 key regional markets of Albany, Augusta, Austin, Baton Rouge, Chattanooga, Columbus, GA., Greenville, Jackson, Knoxville, Lexington, Little Rock, Macon, Memphis, Montgomery, Nashville, New Orleans, and Shreveport and the 65 South West Airlines markets throughout the United States covered by the national cable buy.
“We are thankful for Governor Crist's leadership in providing funding to local Tourist Development Councils which will enhance our promotional efforts during the summer travel season,” states Dan Rowe, president and CEO of Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The Governor's commitment to our region demonstrates his support for Panama City Beach's billion dollar tourism industry and protects thousands of jobs for our residents."
The newspaper ads will appear in USA Today, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Examples of the national cable coverage include networks such as TNT, TBS, USA, CNN, ESPN and the Travel Channel. The three-week ad buy and its new creative elements will begin appearing as early as today.
“Beaches of South Walton and Walton County are extremely appreciative of the Governor's decision to provide funds for use in advertising that our beaches are open,” Dawn Moliterno, executive director of the Beaches of South Walton Tourist Development Council. “These funds will afford us the opportunity to penetrate deep into our existing drive markets and bring awareness to those new, emerging markets served by Southwest Airlines.”
In addition to the new ad buy, Florida began a $2.5 million emergency response campaign in 15 of Florida’s summer drive markets on May 15. The emergency response campaign directed consumers to Florida Live on VISITFLORIDA.com <http://www.visitflorida.com/> to watch live webcams, read Twitter feeds and view up-to-the-minute photos posted by real people in real time from beach destinations throughout Florida. The existing ad buys in those 15 markets will now shift to the new messaging featuring Northwest Florida.
“As news reports raise concerns about a potential impact to Florida from the spill, the best way for visitors from around the world to make informed travel planning decisions was to see the current conditions for themselves,” said Chris Thompson, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “The creation of the Florida Live page on our Web site showing live webcams, Twitter feeds and original photos gives visitors the resources they need to book their Florida trip with confidence.”
On Tuesday, Governor Crist announced the state’s receipt of $25 million from BP for an emergency marketing response to the Gulf oil spill and the creation of a work group to oversee the spending of those funds.
“With this grant from BP, we will be able to react in the coming weeks and months to whatever actually happens by creating additional ads that show what’s going on statewide as well as in individual communities,” continued Thompson.

Navarre Park Summer Concert Series Features Travis Murray June 3
The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Navarre Press are again co-hosting the popular Thursday Evenings in the Park summer concert series. The series will showcase a variety of local musicians on stage with the Navarre Sound and sunset as a backdrop. Spectators are encouraged to bring their beach blankets and lawn chairs for a night of free family entertainment. Each week, concert-goers are encouraged to come hungry and purchase hamburgers, hotdogs, hotlinks, and beverages, as the proceeds help fund the continuation of concerts.
Each week will feature a different genre of music ranging from Jazz, Big Band, Southern Rock and much more. The concert on June 3rd will feature Travis Murray playing alternative Country music sponsored by Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center, Inc.. The summer long series will take place at Navarre Park at the foot of Navarre Bridge on Highway 98. Performances run from 6-8 p.m. starting Thursday, May 27 and continue each Thursday through September 2, 2010. The series is free to the public, made possible by local business sponsorships and food and beverage purchases made on-site.

Memorial Day: Symbolism or Irony?

Needless to say Memorial Day is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to insure our freedom: starting with the Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War (which is when Memorial Day traditions first started), ending with the men and women who give their lives in our present day conflicts, and of course everyone in between such as the men who invaded the beaches at Normandy. The question is, in what ways do we honor those who have given us everything so we can have everything?
First off, for most of us, we get the day off from work and school and in turn, end up sleeping until late morning or early afternoon, depending on how much we took advantage of that rare Sunday night on the town. Others follow an insane concept of getting up early on said day off. And for what, going for a run from one gate of the world's largest Air Force base to the other? Now, I may not have the strength, stamina or desire to give up that rare opportunity of getting more than a few hours of sleep to take on such a task myself, but I certainly admire those who do.
Secondly, at the very least, we show some sign of patriotism, whether it's a flag on the front porch, wearing the colors of your favorite military branch or simply staring at Florida's tallest flagpole for a split-second longer as you see it crossing one of the many bridges in the Greater Fort Walton Beach area. Others go the grave sites of their fallen comrades to pay their respects, or talk to their loved ones in the form of a folded flag and case of medals on their living room wall.
Finally, most of us take advantage of the fact that we live in paradise and celebrate outdoors either in the form of a barbecue, laying out on the beach or taking a boat to Crab Island bringing about the ingenious mixture of alcohol and aquatic activities. The few who don't have the day off prepare for the ironic turn of events when outsiders invade our beaches for the first major weekend of the summer tourist season, enduring rude comments, drunken passes and atrocious gratuities to keep their livelihood.
Now, I know that this is starting to sound like; one of many emails you get on a weekly basis talking about how you should feel guilty for having a good life others make sacrifices. And it is true, in order for most of us to have good lives, others must make sacrifices in order for us to have those good lives. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, firemen, paramedics, policemen, doctors, nurses, construction workers, service workers, teachers and parents make those sacrifices on a daily basis. The truth is, you shouldn't feel guilty for living it up while others make sacrifices. Thankful, yes, but not guilty. These sacrifices are made for the sole purpose of making other people's lives better. Quality of life is the fruits of their labor. If we didn't enjoy ourselves then their sacrifices would be in vain. So, have fun, sleep in, hit the beach, knock back a few, enjoy your day off! That's the best way you can honor the memories of those who fought for your right to life, liberty, and your pursuit of happiness.

The Roving Rogue - Bill Campbell - May 27-June 9, 2010 Issue
Well, things are looking a bit brighter oil-wise than they were a fortnight ago, but there’s still great reason to be concerned, for selfish reasons and for the thousands of people, fish and birds that are destined to be caught up in this mess.
Plans are moving right along for the hair-in-pantyhose booms that are being constructed by volunteers here. To no one’s surprise, the civic-minded Helen Back eatery and bar has jumped in and offered some organizational assistance, including times for volunteers to stuff hair.
(Really, this sounds nuts, but the booms work!)
The times are 3-7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The place is the former Rhodes Furniture Building at 328 Racetrack Road in Fort Walton Beach. You can drop off hair there or arrange for pick up by calling (850) 803-2825 or 376-1477. But organizers are hurting for volunteers, so please pitch in.

If we don’t need ‘em here, they’ll sure be used elsewhere. So, “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.” But we need your help.
While roving Highway 98, I decided to make my inaugural visit to Osaka Japanese restaurant to see why there are always so many cars there. Well, it’s a no-brainer after just one visit. The place is fun, the show good, and the food ample and excellent.
I always opt for the Hibachi table in Japanese restaurants. Just like “More Cow Bells” in that famous Saturday Night Live sketch, I just can’t get enough of metal spatulas being clanged on the stainless steel stovetops. And when I said the show is good, it’s more than that—it’s excellent.
Our chef, Ho, was quite comical, and was also Korean, which seems to fit the mold for most Japanese eateries here. When I pointed out that “Ho” wasn’t very Korean, he said it was supposed to be spelled “Huh” at which point I amused myself terribly by saying, “Huh?”
But it was a great dinner, one that I can’t wait to repeat.
The last two weeks also had me finding some great barbecue at the most unlikely of places: Los Pancho’s Tex-Mex restaurant on Okaloosa Island. After a couple of hours at Helen Back of unsuccessfully trying to best Sears employee Dick Jennings on what I generously call the “Video Crack” games, I headed to Pancho’s for a burrito and a margarita, not necessarily in that order.
Libation successfully poured, lovely bartendress Kim Stepp said, “Have you tried our new barbecue?” I confessed I had not. When what to my wandering eyes would appear but Donald Osborne, retired Air Force Crew Chief and EOD guy and now maker of some damn fine barbecue.
He asked if I’d care for a sampler and I—purely in the interest of competent journalism—accepted. In minutes I had a plate with a rib, brisket, pulled pork, baked beans and a wonderful (and healthy) vinegar-based coleslaw.
There were two excellent sauces and everything was surprisingly wonderful. So much so that I never bothered with the burrito.

We interrupt this bit of whimsy to bring you one of the funniest adlibs I’ve ever enjoyed. Whilst at Angler’s, playing yet-another form of video crack (this one is Buzztime Trivia and involves a sort of laptop and TV network), a friend stepped outside for a smoke.
He returned shortly and was laughing heartily. Seems a group of tourists were looking at the dredging ship that has been plying the waters south of the pier for several days. They asked Steve (we’ll protect his identity by withholding his last name) what sort of boat that was. His reply:
“That’s a dolphin processing boat. Sometimes there are just too many of them, and we have to thin them out.”
They bought it.

HarborWalk Village has all sorts of fun stuff planned for Memorial Day Weekend (which looks pretty strange on my keyboard. “Day Weekend”?) Anyway, there are kid’s things and fireworks tonight if you were first in line to pick up the newest Beachcomber. There will also be a tribute to a local patriot.
Saturday night our very own Elvis will perform from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday there’ll be live entertainment from 6:30 to 8:30 followed by fireworks over the Destin Harbor. Thanks, Peter.
Speaking of HarborWalk, I was strolling the shops—an enjoyable habit of mine—and chanced upon Dean Minton, an incredibly gifted artist who makes a living doing caricatures of visitors and locals alike.
“Deano” has been at it quite awhile, and can work off a sitting person or—for those of you wondering what to give someone—off a picture! He’s a heck of a nice guy as well.
Speaking of the Destin Harbor, the charter boat guys have been all but shut down by the concern over the oil spill. Hey, folks, it’s slightly larger than 1 percent of the Gulf. As we used to say as kids playing cards, “Go fish!”
A spokeswoman for the Emerald Grande told me, "We’re working very aggressively with the TDC. The full impact has yet to be seen, but we’re hopeful. The charter industry has been devastated.”
Ellen Bragg, manager of the Best Western on Okaloosa Island said, “We haven’t had that many cancellations. We need to focus on other things to do here. There’s great history, wonderful shopping, and fine restaurants. Focus on the good things.”
On a happier note, Le Grand Cirque is now performing at Grand Boulevard at Sandestin®. An outgrowth of Cirque de Soleil, it’s been called “out of this world” by the Sidney Express and “beyond belief” by the London Times.

Finally, local chanteuse Toni Drago has long envisioned a jazz venue for local and visiting performers. It’s improbably in the banquet room at the Bangkok House but last Thursday her dream came true.
Jeanie Carlin, a Wisconsin lass who spends a lot of time performing in Europe, came on stage only to be followed by our own gem, Dr. Cheryl Jones. The joint was jumpin’ and I urge you to spend your Thursday evenings there.
We close with a Polish proverb, in keeping with our whimsy earlier: “Fish, to taste right, must swim three times—in water, in butter, and in wine.”
