Sunday Jam with Blue Lew's Groove at the Shed BBQ, Destin

Nora Wixted-Hogue writes:

Hi, y'all!
I know it's been quite awhile since I wrote a "blurb" but here goes one!

Our last Jam at the Cabana Cafe, June 5th, was truly bittersweet. So very many friends and musicians came out to say good-by...and being the girl I am, I got a little teary. We had been there for 3 years and it was tough to leave but it was time...

Since then, Shawn Shackelford, our drummer, has been working with Cadillac Willy and jamming at Tisa's in Niceville. Jim Remsberg has been playing bass with his band "Second Nature" in lots of places. Lew and I were lucky enough to get to way-up-state New York and do a few fireside jams with my family and friends at our yearly reunion. Now, all of a sudden, it's the middle of August! Time flies, yes she does!

But now, we are SO proud and excited and happy to announce that the Sunday Jam is back on!!! Due to the efforts of Chris Manson and the folks at The Beachcomber, we have been invited to hold the Sunday Jam every week, at The Shed BBQ and Blues  Joint in Destin!!! Meggin McPhee, the wonderful manager, and her staff have made us feel so incredibly welcome and we have a HUGE STAGE (remember how many times I said we needed a bigger one?) and a fabulous soundman - Robert - mixing all the music from the front of the "room"! It is a big step up! And, because of the new location, we've had alot of new jammers come by and lots of our favorites, too! Here's a rundown of the first 2 weeks:

On August 7th, our first jam at the Shed, Jim, Shawn, Lew and I were hugging all over each other! Kinda like the "Blues Brothers" - "we're getting the band back together!" - we so missed jamming! The deal with us is that all our music is spontaneous - even if we've played the songs before - they never turn out the same way twice! The musical communication is so darn tight that we can anticipate and react to whatever comes along! Way cool!
We were joined by Scott Noble - definitely an "old" fave - and got the first set rocking right away! A young man, Martin (don't know his last name) came up to play drums and was he so fine! He was visiting from California and truly was a treat! We tried to get Chris Manson to get in front of the mike with his harmonica - but NOOO! He just jammed away from hi front row seat - as did Michael Loftis on Flute - one of these days, they'll be the Stars of the Show! Shawn's father - Ted (we call him Teddy Bear) sang a couple of great songs and Ike Bartley joined in on Sax. We were having so much fun!!! My only complaint was that the songs were too short! I could have done that all night long!!! A lady named Cindy got down on the tanbourine and Doug sang and played bass, too! The audience loved every minute of it! They were dancing (yes, my friends, the Shed has a real live dance floor!!!) and singing along...it was just a great night!

And then...Last Sunday was even better!!! Scott Noble and Butch Blasingame were both there playing electric guitar with us in the first set. Drummer Ed Jones finished up the set with us and, damn, we have some great drummers around here! Then Wes Herndon, a new friend, played acoustic guitar and sang some Springsteen and more doing a fine solo. He would join us later on some back-up vocals, too. Then, it was time for the Jersey Seals!!! Yes, the "I love those Guys" Jersey Seals!!! Aaron (guitar), Joey (drums) and Kevin (keys) were still in town before going off to college this week so we were so lucky to have them! Their bassist, William, had already left for his first year at Auburn, so Jim Remsberg channelled his inner child and held on the bottom! I just love those guys and we wish them excellent times in school! They promised to be back on breaks so we look forward to those jams! The next group to sit in was "Homemade Soul" with Curtis on keys and singing and Tray on drums! Now these two are incredible!!! So much soul and sound - even tho' there were only 2, the "whole band sound" was happenning! If you ever hear of them playing - GO SEE/HEAR!!! They promised to be back next week - I surely hope so! If we're lucky, here on the Gulf Coast, we'll be hearing alot from them! An absolute MUST! We didn't really didn't take a break again...just a couple of "shifting seconds"...When Susy, a friend of Scott Noble's, got up and played eletric guitar and sang with the band. She's got a great voice! She had been at one of the jams last summer and it was great to have her back! She and Scott have been involved in a recording project - we'll keep you informed on their progress! Josh McClusky played guitar with us and Doug came back on bass and vocals. We had two young men sit in at the end of the night playing guitar but I don't know the names! Hope they come back next week because I'd love to be able to tell you who these young talents were! Shack's Dad, "Teddy Bear" got up and sang, too! Talk about talent runnung in the family!!! I know I didn't get the time line correctly but the deal is, IT WAS ONE EXCELLENT JAM!!!

And let me say this about Robert - the sound man - well, he came up and jammed on a couple of songs with us and he is one helluva drummer, too!!! So downright funky that he bruised butts! Yes he did!!!

The Joint was Rockin', the Music was HOT! and a nice cool breeze was blowing in off the harbor. Who could ask for anything more?

EXCEPT GREAT FOOD!!! Lick yo' fingers and slap yo' Mama BBQ!!! It makes it tough to sing with all those delicious smells from the kitchen going on!

The Shed is a totally family-friendly, casual atmosphere kinda place with a sweet bunch of folks, eager to please, working for them. Even if you can't make the Sunday Jam, be sure to get to the Shed and enjoy!!! They've got a full bar, extensive wine list and lots of TVs so you don't have to miss any FOOTBALL!!! And I'm happy to say that I can see the Upstairs Bar TV from my place behind the Keys onstage so I can Keep up with my beloved Saints! (who won the first pre-season game against the 49ers and look REAL GOOD!!!)

All my love and Thanks to Chris from the Beachcomber, Meggin and the gang from the Shed, the guys in the "groove" and all the musicians who came to jam!!! We'll be at it again next week, 6ish Beach Time! Come on in and hear some wonderful music, eat the best BBQ, drink, dance and be merry at The Shed BBQ and blues Joint! See you there!

Live Large, Laugh and Love Alot, and Make Music Any Way That You Can!

Love, Nora

ABC's Good Morning America Names Destin in 10 Most Beautiful Places

The City of Destin, along with the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC), encourages everyone to tune in this week to ABC’s Good Morning America as it names Destin as one of the 10 Most Beautiful Places in America.

GMA will likely air the Destin segment during tomorrow morning’s show. However, it could be Thursday or Friday as the countdown continues throughout the week.

Destin Mayor Sam Seevers says, “This is incredible news and now the rest of the country will see just how beautiful our city is. And, it doesn’t stop with aesthetics. The most wonderful people in the country live right here. I am so proud to call Destin my home.”

The contest began with GMA’s request for anyone to submit a picture of their most beautiful place in America. Producers sifted through thousands and concluded with Destin in the top ten. The winning photo was of a signature sunset over the Destin Bridge at Harry T’s.

GMA came to Destin to film the special segment last week with correspondent and world-renowned chef Emeril Lagasse. The show interviewed the TDC’s public relations associate, Nicole Scott, to speak on what makes Destin so special.

“Destin is a very unique place in that it is still a secret place to some. It still has that casual small-town feel with southern charm and hospitality. It’s no surprise that it is ranked within GMA’s Top Ten, but it is still extremely flattering to have such recognition,” says Scott.

GMA has requested everyone to cast their vote within the Top Ten. Please take a few moments to cast your vote for Destin! Please click on the following link to view and vote! http://abcnews.go.com/gma

Serenity by the sea Spa Celebrates 10 Years

Serenity by the sea, the award-winning spa at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, will now offer its guests a new fitness experience, with the recent installation of brand-new Precor® equipment – just in time for its 10th anniversary. The Emerald Coast’s “Best Spa,” as voted on by readers of Emerald Coast Magazine since 2003, is now one of a select group of hotel fitness facilities worldwide to meet the standards of Hilton Fitness by Precor®, an initiative aimed at providing guests with workout essentials while on the go.

“We’re excited to be able to offer our guests the best of the best in fitness equipment and ensure they achieve the optimal workout at our facility,” said Ryan Holt, spa director. “At Serenity by the sea, we take great pride in providing a premier, world-class spa experience, from traditional spa treatments, to personalized services and full-service fitness offerings.”

The fitness center update is a result of the $250,000 investment on the spa’s infrastructure, as part of the Hilton Sandestin Beach’s $6.5 million hotel-wide renovation project, completed in March.

Focus on Fitness
As a result of this initiative, Serenity by the sea’s fitness center now boasts eight 956i low-impact treadmills, three EFX® 576i elliptical fitness cross-trainers, an upright bike, and a  recumbent bike, as well as new weight equipment, including a functional training station – all by Precor®, the global leader in fitness equipment – and ECOmax recycled rubber floor tiling. Precor® machines distinguish themselves for providing users with an invigorating and more personalized workout – every treadmill and elliptical comes with its own TV screen, for example.

In Serenity by the sea’s fully equipped fitness center, guests can work out on their own or enjoy the expertise offered by onsite personal trainers. Additionally, the spa offers a wide array of fitness classes tailored for every mood in need. These include Yoga, Zumba, Yoga-lates, Pilates, and Belly Ballet and take place on the beach, pool deck or fitness studio. Individual, 12-, and 20-class passes are available. Share the Shelter: Musicians Band Together Against Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty

On Sunday, July 24, five music acts will take the stage for the Share the Shelter Music Fest, an outdoor concert to raise awareness and funds for Alaqua Animal Refuge and Shelter House Domestic Violence Center.

Daphne Willis
The event, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., will feature live performances by Bryan Kennedy (“Life Shines – The 30A Song”), Vanguard Records recording artist Daphne Willis, local favorite Kelsey Anna, and Beachcomber Music Award winners Dread Clampitt and Heritage. All of these musicians are passionate about supporting the two local nonprofits in their missions to end domestic violence and animal abuse.

“When people come together and focus collective and creative energy, as we hope to do through the organizations, musicians and supporters of Share the Shelter, we can make social change happen,” says Michelle Sperzel, executive director of Shelter House. “Domestic violence touches the entire family, from the women we serve to the pet that shows its unconditional love.”

Laurie Hood, president and founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge, says, "Through Share the Shelter, we have found the perfect opportunity to partner with Shelter House. At the heart of both of our nonprofits, we are focused on providing a safe haven and a second chance at life. This music fest will not only provide an amazing evening of musical entertainment, but it will also help both local organizations create a strong voice against the atrocities of abuse."

The event will offer a variety of vendors, including artist and jewelry makers and specialty retailers, as well as food and beverage from 98 Bar-B-Que, Amore Pizzeria, Hawaiian Shaved Ice, the Itty Bitty Ice Cream Mini and Tacos YĘĽall.

In addition, Share the Shelter will feature an open air VIP lounge that will give ticket holders exclusive access to the artists, upholstered seating in a premium location, complimentary appetizers and beverages (including offerings from Grayton Beer Co.), chair massages provided by serenity by the sea therapists, and Share the Shelter swag bags.

Sponsors for Share the Shelter Music Fest include the Seagrove Coyote and La Botana at the title level; AlliBeck Events at the platinum level; 30A.com, Dixieletricar of Destin, Graffiti's Funky Blues Shack, Silver Sands Factory Stores, the Red Bar and Think It Wear It Express at the gold level; Preston Hood Chevrolet, Proffitt PR and Smiling Fish Café at the silver level; and Grayton Beer Co. at the VIP level.

General admission tickets to Share the Shelter Music Fest are available for $20 at www.ShelterHouseNWFL.org, the Silver Sands Factory Stores information kiosk, Alaqua Animal Refuge, Shelter House, and La Botana restaurant. Tickets will be $25 on the day of the event.

Limited tickets to the VIP lounge are available in advance through the Web site or by phone for $100. Commemorative T-shirts can be purchased at the event or at www.ThinkItWearItstore.com.

ABOUT THE BENEFACTORS
Shelter House is the state-certified domestic violence shelter serving victims of domestic violence in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Services include a 24-hour hotline, crisis counseling, advocacy, outreach, primary prevention, transitional housing and confidential sheltering.

Between July 1, 2010 and May 1, 2011, Shelter House directly touched more than 3,665 lives in Okaloosa and Walton counties by providing the numerous services to abused women and children.

If you feel that a family member or intimate partner is endangering your physical or emotional safety, or if you know someone experiencing this in their home, call Shelter HouseĘĽs hotline at 1-800-44-ABUSE, or (850) 863-4777.

Alaqua Animal Refuge—an independent, nonprofit organization located on FloridaĘĽs Emerald Coast—advocates the general welfare and humane treatment of animals by providing shelter, prevention of pet overpopulation, and adoption services.

Located on 10 acres in Freeport, the refuge was formed by Walton County resident Laurie Hood in 2007 when she discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter/adoption organization in the area.

Since then, Alaqua Animal Refuge has helped find homes for more than 6,000 animals. Currently, up to 100 animals are adopted per month from this unique rescue facility, which serves as a true refuge for more than 250 animals at any given time.

Blue Dog Art Display at Seagar's Restaurant in Sandestin

Seagar’s Prime Steaks and Seafood guests now have the opportunity to enjoy artwork by Louisiana artist and creator of the internationally recognized Blue Dog works, George Rodrigue. More than a dozen Blue Dog prints are hanging on the walls of Northwest Florida’s first AAA Four Diamond restaurant. The artwork has been displayed in anticipation of “An Evening with George Rodrigue,” a fund raiser being presented by the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation and the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts in late September, for which Seagar’s will serve as the hosting sponsor.

In celebration of the iconic art, Seagar’s general manager and certified sommelier, Kevin Moran, has created a signature Blue Dog martini, available through September. This commemorative drink blends Stolichnaya blueberry vodka, blue Curacao, pineapple and lemon juice.

“We’re honored to welcome the art of George Rodrigue to our restaurant and to have the opportunity to serve as the host of an event that will help advance the missions of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation and of the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts to motivate and engage students through the arts,” Moran said. “The Blue Dog martini was created to help celebrate this special occasion and toast to these renowned pieces of artwork.”

The Blue Dog martini is now available on the restaurant’s cocktail menu for $14.95. Additionally, Seagar’s boasts a wine list of more than 600 wine labels, which has earned Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” for seven consecutive years.

Since its opening in 1998, Seagar’s has distinguished itself for its classic steakhouse offerings, creative seafood presentations with international influences, dramatic tableside preparations and open-theater kitchen, and continues to be extolled by critics as one of the finest dining destinations in the region.

Located on the lower lobby level of the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, Seagar’s is open Sunday through Thursday, 6-9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 6-10 p.m. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 850-622-1500 or online at www.SeagarsDestin.com. Also, keep up with the latest Seagar’s news on Facebook: www.Facebook.com/Seagars. To learn more about the Hilton Sandestin Beach, please visit www.HiltonSandestinBeach.com or call (850) 267-9500.

Lefty Williams at Destin's Shed BBQ Friday July 15

After more than two decades of musical experience and 70 months of non-stop touring, Atlanta-born Lefty Williams will return to the Destin area at The Shed B.B.Q. Friday July 15th 7pm. for a free show.

His new record “Snake Oil” was produced and engineered by John Keane (REM, Widespread Panic), who also produced Williams’ first album.

Lefty Williams was born without a right hand, but that didn’t stop him from playing guitar as early as age four.  By age six, Williams had fashioned his own prosthetic pick to further improve his musical talent.  A self-taught musician who was playing in bands as early as 11-years-old, Williams later went on to graduate with honors from the Atlanta Institute of Music.  After teaching at AIM and gravitating from several diverse bands, Lefty decided to form his own band.

Jason 'Lefty' Williams sounds like he could be the next link in the chain of legendary Georgia guitarists after Duane Allman and Robert Cray.

The music of the Lefty Williams Band is a unique mixture of Southern rock, funk, and blues, influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Miles Davis, Warren Haynes, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers, and early Led Zeppelin.  Lefty Williams brings to the band a broad musical background ranging from heavy metal to grunge bands, which eventually grew into the bluesy, jazz-influenced style he plays today.

Touring the Southeast Lefty Williams and his band are making waves and new fans everywhere they perform. For additional info, music, and photos, visit www.lefty-music.com
