Our theatre family suffers another loss......I am so sorry to tell you that we have lost a great theatre friend, Don White. He and his beloved Jackie recently relocated to Virginia to be with their children and grandchildren. Don suffered a massive heart attack on the golf course; he was playing golf with his son-in-law, Reese, when it happened. Doing what he enjoyed. Don was a member of St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Productions and the Joyful Noise Singers. Please keep Jackie, Gayle, Reese and their twins in your prayers. The Mass on Sunday, August 29 at 11:00am at St. Mary's will be said for Don, requested by the Joyful Noise Singers. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. As I know more information I will bring it you. Our sincerest condolences to family and friends.

Happy 4th from the City of Fort Walton Beach

The City of Fort Walton Beach would like to encourage everyone to be safe this 4th of July weekend.  The Fort Walton Beach Police Department will be enforcing laws regarding illegal fireworks.  Illegal fireworks are those that fly and/or explode.  Sparklers, fountains and smokers are permitted.  Police officers will respond to unlawful fireworks calls and confiscate all fireworks; charges may be filed if warranted.    Police will also strictly enforce Driving Under the Influence laws during the holiday period.  If you plan on drinking alcohol, please have a designated driver or call a taxi.  A cab fare is cheaper than a DUI.

If you are planning on using fireworks at your home, the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department reminds you of these safety tips:
Ø     Always read and follow label directions
Ø     Have an adult present when setting off fireworks
Ø     Buy from state certified fireworks distributors only
Ø     Ignite outdoors with water handy (garden hose)
Ø     Don’t make your own fireworks or take fireworks apart to see how they work
Ø     Never relight fireworks that don’t work
Ø     Don’t give fireworks to small children
Ø     Store in a cool dry place
Ø     Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water before disposing
Ø     Never throw fireworks or shoot them at another person
Ø     Never carry fireworks in your pocket
Ø     Never shoot fireworks inside glass or metal containers

The City of Fort Walton Beach wishes everyone a safe and happy 4th of July.

Thursday - HarborWalk Village Honors "Planting Peace" Hero

Destin, Fl (June 2010) The Red, White and Blue Celebrations are a weekly ceremony that honor local heroes. The celebrations highlight the efforts of people who go above and beyond, demonstrating heroism within their community. The celebrations continue all summer, featuring free local entertainment and children's fun activities. The entertainment performances will include the Highsteppers Dance troupe and The Ballet Conservatory. One of the highlights of the celebration is an exciting WWII mini airshow at the beginning of the hero's recognition every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The big finale for each celebration is a spectacular fireworks display over Destin Harbor at 8:30 p.m.  Weekly fireworks displays are sponsored by Buffalo Rock, Pepsi MAX and Cox Communications.

HarborWalk Village is honored to dedicate the July 1st celebration to Aaron Jackson.

Aaron Jackson is not the usual twenty-eight year old . This exceptional young man has always had a heart for helping the less fortunate. Jackson was raised in Destin, Florida and graduated from Fort Walton Beach High School.  At the age of 22, Jackson along with his best friend, John Dieubon founded Planting Peace.  But before his venture into non profit work, he interned with the organization Homeless Voice, that launched Jackson into being the co-founder of Planting Peace. Planting Peace contributes aid to Haiti Relief.  He travels to Haiti approximately 15 times a year and has roughly 25 volunteers that assist him in making miracles happen.

Planting Peace has been featured on CNN several times and Aaron was nominated for Anderson Cooper's CNN Hero award for all his efforts.  He has also been featured on Larry King Live, American Morning, USA Today, Headline News, Glenn Beck, Paula Zahn, Nancy Grace and the Associated Press.  Assisting  in 6 orphanages and treating over 9.9 million children in Haiti with de-worming medication.  In addition, he is working to protect around 2,000 acres of Amazon Forest and has plans to have 10 million trees planted by the end of this year.

In light of the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Planting Peace has placed a call to action.  The Planting Peace office is located roughly 40 feet from the Gulf of Mexico in Destin, Florida, so they are compelled to respond with vigor to this crisis.  They have begun buying response boat absorption booms, and clean up equipment for any effort needed to clean and reclaim this beautiful part of the world. Planting Peace will be supporting animal welfare projects associated with this tragic dilemma.

Jackson's endeavors have truly helped save lives, benefitted the enviroment and improved living conditions in these underdeveloped countries.  He stated in the Walton Sun, "I have no connection to money, so I don't miss it.  I couldn't care less about money.  It's not my thing."

Sadly, another theatre friend has left us........Rich Lancaster passed away August 12, 2009. I heard about it now because of a memorial project at his home theatre, the South Baldwin Community Theatre in Gulf Shores, AL. Rich shared his wonderful talents with us in Pensacola performing at the Pensacola Little Theatre in BEYOND THERAPY in 1998 and the ODD COUPLE: FEMALE VERSION in 2003 and directing PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE in 2001 and SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN in 2002, as I recall. I was lucky enough to appear in the ODD COUPLE with him. He played one of the Spanish brothers invited over to dinner. Valerie Russenberger and I played Flo and Olive, respectively. If you saw it, you'll remember the hilarity in the scene where the brothers (Rich and Jim Poule) joined us for the big date. So much fun! Rich was a pro. He was a very gifted actor and director who will be missed by so many. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
This tribute is from the SBCT website: Rich Lancaster, an actor and director for SBCT, will be remembered for his contributions to theatre, with the dedication of a bench in the garden. “Rich was an area realtor who was active in this theater and other community theaters,” said SBCT Board President Elaina Herring. “He was a creative actor and director and his talents were appreciated by many who knew and worked with him.” Lancaster, 58, died August 12, 2009. He was a longtime resident of Gulf Shores where he worked and was involved with such community activities as SBCT and the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival. “How fitting for Rich that a garden bench be placed in his memory in the beautiful gardens of the South Baldwin Theatre, which was such a vital and important part of his life,” said Brucie Glassell, one of Lancaster’s friends. “The very spot where Rich loved to go smoke, while he paced back and forth so many times, going over his lines, is where the memorial bench will be placed!” Some of the productions Lancaster was involved with at SBCT included: Miss Firecracker, Gypsy, Stars over Dixie, Move Over Mrs. Markham and I’ll Be Home for Christmas. SBCT President Emeritus Joyce James extolled Lancaster’s talent as a director. “He was an excellent director. He knew how he wanted to interpret the play and did,” James said. The board of SBCT and volunteers created the memorial garden. “In the past, we had tables and shaded areas outside to sit, eat and work on lines,” Herring said. “As we have cleaned up the areas surrounding the theater this year, we noticed how beautiful and peaceful the back area was. The garden will be a peaceful place to encourage conversation and relaxation.”James said SBCT’s Memorial Garden is a wonderful project for the community theater. “It’s a fitting way to honor and remember actors and directors who have shared their talent with the theater,” she said. Donations made be made in Rich's name to the memorial garden and may be designated toward specific items such as tables, landscaping, fountains or personalized landscaping bricks. For more information on the garden, call SBCT at 251-968-6721.

Set on a magical island, The Tempest provides several interesting creatures for our players to portray, and many fascinating locales for those creatures to inhabit. Do you have to be experienced? First timers will become comfortable speaking in front of others while the experienced actors will be able to sharpen their performing skills. Performance Day: Parents, family and friends are invited to view the performance on the last day of this summer program. Be on the lookout at the sign-in tables for an invitation to this performance. To enroll or for more details go to www.UWF.edu/ExploreCamps <http://www.uwf.edu/ExploreCamps> or call 850-473-7468 or e-mail ExploreCamps@UWF.edu <mailto:ExploreCamps@UWF.edu>

Free Doobies and Kenny Loggins Concert on Okaloosa Island's Boardwalk This Sunday

Rock The Beach is a free concert sponsored by The Emerald Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau featuring The Doobie Brothers and Kenny Loggins live on Sunday, June 27 at 5 p.m..  We invite you to come to the beach behind the Boardwalk on beautiful Okaloosa Island to Rock the Beach and celebrate our beautiful Emerald Coast.  The concert is free for everyone!  There will be refreshments and beverages available, no coolers allowed.  Free parking is available at the Boardwalk, the Emerald Coast Conference Center, Beasley Park, Gulf Islands National Seashore and Marler Park. Donations will be accepted in support of the losses suffered by locals because of the oil spill.

The Doobie Brothers are one of the very few American musical groups that have been able to achieve a phenomenal level of success and sustain it for a period of time measured in decades; it is a success that has sold more than 50 million records worldwide.  Combined with their consistent appeal on the road, The Doobies have earned a fanatical loyalty for their high-energy shows, and are truly one of America's most loved rock and roll bands.

During nearly four decades as a professional singer-songwriter, Kenny Loggins has established himself as many things to countless music lovers. For the first half of the Seventies, Loggins was, along with Jim Messina, part of the popular and influential duo Loggins & Messina that formed in the wake of the classic 1971 album Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In. Loggins grew even more popular for recording a series of soundtrack pop smashes including such Top Ten hits as “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack, “Footloose” from Footloose, “Danger Zone” from Top Gun and “Nobody’s Fool” from Caddyshack II.

South Walton Community Council Public Forum on Deepwater Horizon June 26

On June 26, the South Walton Community Council will sponsor a public forum on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The guest speaker, Riki Ott, is a community activist, a former commercial salmon “fisherm’am,” and has a doctorate in marine toxicology with a specialty in oil pollution. Living in Alaska, she experienced firsthand the devastating effects of the  Exxon Valdez oil spill—and chose to devote much of her time and passion to trying to do something about it. She is now meeting with groups throughout the Gulf to provide knowledge and support as the Deepwater Horizon spill so  closely parallels many of the issues faced in Alaska.

Dr. Ott is the author of  Sound Truth and Corporate Myth$: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and Not One Drop: Promises, Betrayal, and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (Chelsea Green, 2008). She is also the founder of three nonprofit organizations that deal with lingering harm from man-made environmental disaster.

Dr. Ott will be speaking at the Walton County Coastal Branch Library this Saturday, June 26 at 9 a.m. The meeting is free and open to the public. The library is located at 437 Greenway Trail (near the courthouse on U.S. 331 south of the Bay)

Please come out and learn about oil, dispersants, and what to expect, health wise for people and the ocean and estuary ecosystem as the oil continues to gush and spread throughout the Gulf.

The meeting will end in plenty of time for those who are going to the beach for the Hands Across the Sand global gathering for clean energy and the end of coastal and offshore drilling.
