I feel like all I do is share sad news with you all, but, I need to tell you that former Pensacola Little Theatre President and volunteer, Ray Hillyer passed away on May 31. I've known Ray and his brother Henry since I took ballet from Elvie DeMarko in the sixties and seventies. My sincerest condolences to Henry, their family and friends. Obituary reprinted from the PNJ: Ray Gilder Hillyer passed away unexpected May 31 at his home, Melrose Manor. Ray was born December 1, 1932 in Sour Lake, TX. He was graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts. Following college Ray joined the United States Air Force. After serving at Hurlburt Field, Ray relocated to Pensacola where he remained until his death. He worked for the St. Regis Paper Company, later acquired by the Stone Container Company and was retired after more than 30 years as Senior Artist. He was an active member of the Pensacola Little Theater serving as president and continuing on the board for many years. He was extensively involved with the Elvie DeMarko School of Ballet, dancing, teaching and creating sets. He designed sets and costumes for the Crewe of La Fitte and De Luna coordinating the annual pageantry. He was a sought after consultant for many local weddings. Ray was an active member of Christ Church, a lifelong Episcopalian and devoted acolyte. He is survived by his brother, Henry H. Hillyer of Pensacola. Ray is also survived by one living sister and predeceased by one sister and two brothers outside of the Pensacola area. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Harry Hargrove Hill III officiating. Entombment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00pm, Friday, June 4, 2010 at the funeral home. BAYVIEW FISHER-POU CHAPEL, 3351 Scenic Highway, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Pensacola, 5 N. Q Street, Pensacola, FL 32505. Condolences may be offered at www.bayviewfisher-pouchapel.com <http://www.bayviewfisher-pouchapel.com/>

Kaylin Shuck Update 6-2: "Kaylin is doing better every day. All stitches/staples in her arm are out. She completed tenth grade via in-home schooling. She is still on pain meds. Kaylin was fitted with a walking boot. Insurance does not cover the in-home stuff, but she is getting better and has great attitude for someone who just six weeks ago was lying face down in the middle of the street after getting run over by a speeding motorcycle." Keep getting better Kaylin, we're rooting for you!

Entrants sought for Power of Photography Show (revised notice)......Do you have a favorite photo you took and have been wondering where to show it off? Here’s your chance. The Wide Angle Photo Club is seeking entrants for its 17th annual Power of Photography Show and Trade Expo. The show runs from July 9-11 at the Wright Place in downtown Pensacola. Anyone may enter contest pictures. The show is open to public viewing for free for three days, including Gallery Night. The show has community and business sponsors and national vendors, too. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to winning photos. Last year, some 750 entries by more than 150 photographers from all over the Gulf Coast helped raise over $3,000 for ARC Gateway. Interest is running high again this year says Marty Campbell, WAPC POP SHOW Chairman, of Gulf Breeze. “We’ve had a great response from the community, despite the tough economic times. We would also like to thank Thrift-T Drugs for being our major sponsor for this year’s show. We also need to thank Rob’s Camera as a major contributor.” Categories include Animals; Close-ups; Elements of Design; Flowers, Plants & Trees; Nature & Landscapes; Open, Art & Abstract. “Those include a broad spectrum of images and we think most people can find a category they’re comfortable with,” said WAPC member Kenny Wilder of Navarre Beach. “With this beautiful area in which we live, there’s surely some subject matter that will appeal to most everyone.” There is a special category for Youth (photos taken by photographers 16 and under) and all of those photos will be hung in the show and eligible for monetary awards also. Contestants may enter as many original photos as they wish (size 8-by-10 or larger) for an entry fee of $10 per photo. A portion of the show proceeds go to benefit ARC, which helps developmentally disabled children and adults. Entry fees and matted photos are due between 10am and 2pm, June 19 at ARC Gateway on 10th Avenue in Pensacola. See details, prize criteria, sponsors and rules on the club's Website www.wideanglephotoclub.org <http://www.wideanglephotoclub.org/>

A Very Special Performance!.................The Pyramid Players (adults with developmental disabilities) present Getting to Know CINDERELLA, an adaptation by Tom Briggs of Rodgers & Hammerstein's famed musical Cinderella on June 11 & 12 at the Pensacola Junior College Ashmore Auditorium. Starting at 5:30pm, both evenings of fabulous entertainment will kick off with an art show and sale, a silent auction and a raffle. Curtain is at 7:00pm.Admission is free! Donations Appreciated!! Seating is limited so call 850-453-3341 to reserve yours today!!! Synopsis: Imagine a world where dreams come true. A world where mice become men, pumpkins turn into coaches, and where a lowly servant can rise from the cinders to become a princess. A world where the impossible becomes...well...possible. Can you see it? Are you there? This magical musical production, running for two nights, is the Players' first big-stage performance since 2004. While offering the familiar melodies from the original, the Players' version features plenty of comedic silliness, with Cinderella, portrayed by well known Pensacola Pyramid soprano Betty Wells, as an independent woman who strives to make her own dreams come true. You'll also see the infamous wicked woman who gives all stepmothers a bad name (Lori Cooper), the petulant, spoiled stepsisters (Ann James & Rosa Davis), a handsome prince (Patrick Beyl) and, of course, the fairy godmother (Joanna Dykes), who teaches Cinderella all about possibilities. And that is what The Players are all about: possibilities. The Players are adults with developmental disabilities, professionally trained at the Pensacola Pyramid School of Fine Arts, whose abilities shine through on stage. This amazing troupe, which includes several highly trained vocalists, will wow you with their talent, leaving those who attend with a song in their hearts and a greater understanding of how to turn the impossible into the possible, and make it a reality. Add to that a year of rehearsals, great sets, costumes, lighting and sound, and you have a thoroughly professional production and a night of the best in community theatre Pensacola has to offer. In addition to the two performances of Getting to Know Cinderella, there will be a fine art show and sale featuring framed art, prints, ceramics and jewelry made by Pyramid-trained artists from our fine arts program. You'll also have the opportunity to bid on not one, but two, original Cinderella promotional art pieces. For more information on tickets for Getting to Know Cinderella or how you can help, please contact Cindy Coleman at 850-453-3341 or ccoleman@pyramidinc.org
