HarborWalk Village Honors Educator Pat Kennedy Thurs. June 17

The Red, White and Blue Celebrations are a weekly ceremony that honors local heroes. The celebrations highlight the efforts of people who go above and beyond, demonstrating heroism within their community. The celebrations continue all summer, featuring free local entertainment and children's fun activities. The entertainment performances will include the Highsteppers Dance troupe and The Ballet Conservatory along with the Destin School of Music and Dance. One of the highlights of the celebration is an exciting WWII mini airshow at the beginning of the hero's recognition every Thursday at 7 p.m. The big finale for each celebration is a spectacular fireworks display over Destin Harbor at 8:30.  Weekly fireworks displays are sponsored by Buffalo Rock, Pepsi MAX and Cox Communications.

HarborWalk Village is honored to dedicate the Thursday, June 17th celebration to Pat Kennedy, a lifelong educator and volunteer who has given a head start to many young lives by offering an opportunity for early education. Kennedy has launched several Head Start programs, offering an early education for high risk children. Kennedy is a tireless volunteer, and member of the Head Start Board of Directors.  As a lifelong educator, Kennedy understands the power of the arts to touch peoples lives, especially when they are very young and just forming their views about the world. Kennedy volunteers as an art teacher with the McGriff Street Head Start program. Kennedy was so inspired that she started fund raising programs for art and music classes for children at high risk in our area. Kennedy knows that the life long investment of early education has changed many lives.  Kennedy explains what inspires her most, "My greatest personal reward is seeing the children's happiness when they respond to our programs: the child who comes out of a depression because of dance class, the child who suddenly wants to listen to classical music instead of only rap, the child who overcomes obstacles in her personal life by singing her heart out.The gifts the children are given through the arts and literature programs are touching their future lives in ways that I may never know, but I am certain Head Start Arts will make their lives more interesting, meaningful and joyful. That's just what it has done for my life."
